Conventions, Crops, Workshops and Classes Many scrapbookers are confused by the terminology and do now know what the difference between a convention, crop, class and a workshop is. This will help you figure it all out! Crop- a period of time that you work on your books. Some crops offer handouts or mini-classes on a skill but many do not. Workshop- a period of time to work on your albums generally does include a short class and a handout teaching a new skill. Class- a period of time specifically designated to learn a new skill. Many classes include a hands-on segment where you complete a page in the class. Convention- generally offer a shopping opportunity and an opportunity to take classes. Some offer an opportunity to view other people's scrapbook pages or books. Most scrapbookers do not use their time at a convention to work on their albums even if space is made available but instead prefer to shop, socialize and gather ideas. Some conventions do offer a "Crop Night" so that you can get work done on your albums.
Now that the terminology has all been explained lets talk about costs. Crops very from just a few dollars for a few hours to $50+ per day depending on what is offered and what area of the country you live in. An expensive cropping event usually includes lunch, hadouts and instruction. Why should you pay to crop at someone else's house? 1) If you need time away from you home in order to work on your albums. 2) If you do not yet have the tools you need to complete your pages 3) If you do not have a local scrapbooking club where you can scrapbook for free. Workshops again vary from a few dollar for a few hours to $50+ per day. Why would you pay for a workshop? To learn new scrapbooking skills. Classes usually teach a specific topic and the price varies according to the topic, the handouts that you will receive and any materials that are provided with the class. Class vary from $5 t0 $40+. Why should you pay for a class? To get detailed instruction in a new skill or technique and the hands on practice of completing a project. Conventions can range from $3 to over $100 depending on how many days the event covers and how many classes you sign up for. Why should you pay for a convention? 1) Lots os scrapbooking retailers conveniently located in one place. 2) Chance to take many different classes from "expert" teachers. 3) Opportunity to get new ideas and meet other scrapbookers. |
