Online Shopping

Things to look for when shopping online.

1. Privacy Statements. Be sure to look for the Web site’s privacy statement. Privacy statements are legally binding documents that describe the way the information that you provide to a site will be used by that site. Understand how your information will be used before you do business with a Web site. Steer clear of Web sites that don’t have a privacy statement or that state that they will be selling your email address to others.

2. Credit cards. Use your credit cards for all Internet purchases, the same consumer protection laws that apply in a "brick and mortar" store apply on the Internet. Credit card useage allows you to contest any charges if the merchandise does not live up to their promises. Also, federal law limits your liability to $50 for purchases made with a stolen credit card.

3. Security. No Web site is hack proof, but you should only place Internet credit card orders through secure servers. Most websites alert you when you are entering a secure area (unless you have that option turned off). Check that the URL begins with “https” rather than “http”; this indicates that you have entered the secure area of a server.

4. Common sense. Don’t disclose information on the Internet that you wouldn’t want to disclose over the phone or in person.

5. Use online stores that are well established and have a good reputation or that are part of a large off-line company.
