Re-doing old albums

  • Most of the damage to a color photos is done in its first 5 years.

  • Black and White photos are more stable than color and are fairly resistant to damage. So if youhave an old album full of B&W photos and it is in good shape, you should probably leave it alone and preserve the original handwriting that is in the album that you will not be able to transfer.

  • Old scrapbooks might not be labeled   "photo safe" or archival quality  but if they are old enough they may be made of cotton rag which IS safe.

  • If the album is over 50 years old and is in good condition, leave it in tact. The value of the album is in the handwriting and other non-transferable heirloom qualities. It must be pretty stable (safe) to have lasted 50 years and be in decent shape.
