What should I take to a workshop?

If I am organized I go and pull out my next layouts from my "Power Planning Box" Since I am often NOT that well organized I have learned to "punt". Here are step by step instructions for the beginner:

1) Go through your photos and choose enough for the night. (If you are a slow scrapbooker like me, that means 4-6 photos of one event will be PLENTY!!) Grab MORE than you think you will do though, that way if you are on a roll and get a lot done you won't run out OR if you decide you are going to be picky you have a selection.

2) Look at the colors in the photos and grab a few sheets of paper to go with them. For example, if the photos are of the backyard when it is nice and green, maybe grab some green paper. If you have some patterned paper that goes with the photos bring it.

3) Think REALLY quickly about layout.

  • Do you have any templates, die cuts or stickers that you think would go well with the page? If so bring them.
  • Don't agonize over the layout at this time, but if you  have a magazine or idea book that has a layout you might want to reference, grab it, too.
  • Bring your favorite pair of scissors for the task. For example- deckle scissor are my favorite for old- fashioned pages. Zipper scissors SCREAM rugged/ boy pages. If you think about it, I bet that you  have favorite scissors for certain types of pages.
  • Bring scrapbook pages or cardstock to complete the layouts you are planning.
  • Bring at least a black pen for journaling. if you plan on doing pen art, bring the set(s) of pens you will need.
  • Adhesives geared to the page you will be working on. for example for a heritage page, bring photo mounting corners, for punch art bring ZIG - Way glue.

4) Repeat this for every set of photos that you are bringing.

5) Bring a minimum of tools. If you are going to an event where you KNOW that they'll have a large paper trimmer, circle cutter, templates, decorative rulers, etc- done't bring those things!! Do always bring your own sharp scissors and a personal paper cutter to INCREASE your productivity.  Don't pack so few tools that you'll be stranded for a long time if someone else is using a cutter or if the crop doesn't have a tool you thought they would. If there is something that YOU use a lot, bring it.

6) If you crop away from home a lot, get a GOOD scrapbooking tote. It will be worth it for the amount of time and aggravation you will save.

TSIN has an article on scrapbooking on the go that also might help.
